Well, we know that the English language evolves over
time. Languages evolve while spelling tends to remain
standardized and fixed. The silent e on the end of
words was once a scwa. Gh was once not silent, but a
breathy gh sound that no longer exists in English.

But I can't believe the STANDARD pronunciation of
Gloucester and Worcester has changed to the point
where noone thinks they are pronounced pretty much how
they sound!
