Hello Susan --
I have not had the opportunity to use this remote access, myself. I have
been considering getting a membership to the New York Genealogical and
Biographical society ($60 per year) which gives access to the
HeritageQuest Online and full-text NY Times archives (we have lots of LI
ancestors too). Some of the recent traffic on alt.genealogy suggests
this access is widespread and growing -- for example:

Searching for Heritage Quest Online does not always turn up who has access.
First lookup your local city & county public libraries and genealogy
organizations as often they will have access for members. Telephone or
email them. I use free Public Library access because I pay taxes so why not
use what I pay for already via my taxes.
Here is a short collection of libraries offering this service for a
non-resident yearly fee. Most also have other types of databases, which you
can also access at your home computer.
If you know of any others please post:

Some libraries offer free access via a statewide library card like this one

Telephone or email all the counties and cities near you.

My impression is that HeritageQuest, purveyor of many kinds of
databases, is pulling back from Consumer-based customers and
concentrating more directly on libraries and large organizations
instead. In this case, I believe they are encouraging libraries to
deploy it to their patrons, though I would welcome anyone's more
knowledgeable correction of my assessment.
