Uxbridge, Millville, Blackstone and Woonsocket are all along the Blackstone
River. The Blackstone Canal was built by Irish immigrants (and others) in the
early 1800's.
Many, many textile mills were built all along the river/canal and
immigrants from many countries especially French Canadians moved into the area to work
them.
I grew up in Whitinsville when everyone worked and the Whitin Machine Works.
The route from Worcester, MA to Providence, RI ran along the Blackstone
River on route 122. I remember that trips to Woonsocket or Worcester were common b
ut to go to Milford (out of the Blackstone Valley) was not as common. I
imagine that this was a habit from the old days when everyone used the river to
travel.
Happy Hunting,
Sonia
