This seems to fit.

Civil War military

Frederick Bender
residence: Roxbury, Mass.
occupation: shoemaker
enlisted May 24, 1861, age 21 as a private, Company K, First Infantry
Regiment Massachusetts
deserted November 13, 1861, Budds's Ferry, Maryland

Cordwainer is another term for shoemaker.
Actual battle was January 31, 1862, so the soldiers may have been
camped there before then.
Interesting though is that under category, Distinguished Service, it
says Distinguished Service, for him (also for others). Did he really
desert?
