The fact that I can answer your question shows my age, and the fact that you have to ask shows yours.

During WW II, there was a government agency that controlled how much things cost. This was the Office of Price Administration (OPA). I am sure if you do a Google search you will learn thing about the OPA that you never wanted to know!
