Similar notations next to other people on census pages by the same census
taker should suggest a pattern. Yours could be short for 1902 for an
immigration year -- are there some 18xx and the rest one- or two-digit
numbers with an implied 1900?
Just yesterday on a 1930 MA census I saw a "2" notation next to the name
of someone who, I hope, was on his second marriage (beware wishful
thinking, I know). In my case the page had mostly 1s, some 2s, one 3.
Your mileage may vary.
