J. C. BARTHOLOMEW OF BARRE IS DEAD
Vice President of Savings Bank Dies Suddenly
BARRE. Feb. 2, - JOHN E. (sic) BARTHOLOMEW, 85, one of the towns leading
citizens and vice president of the Barre Savings Bank, died suddenly this
morning while shoveling snow off his walk. Death was due to a heart attack.
He was born in Hardwick, but has resided in this town the past 70 years. His
early education was obtained in the public schools, after which he entered
the employ of HARDING WOODS and company as a clerk. For many years he was a
proprietor of a men's clothing store, retiring more than 25 years ago.
His banking affiliations were started in 1886, when he was elected to the
board of trustees of the Barre Savings bank and in April, 1895, he was elected
vice president and held both positions at the time of his death. Although of
late years he took no active part in local politics,
he retained a keen interest in town affairs and was for many years tax
collector, town treasurer and town clerk. He has been and was at the time of his
death a notary public.
His interest and counsel served well on the board of trustees of the Barre
Public Library, a position which he held for a long time, retiring two years
ago. He was also a member of the Barre Thief and Rogue Detecting society and the
Barre Village Improvement society.
One of the most active and interested members of the First Parish (Unitarian)
church, his advice was continually sought in the affairs of the church. He
was a member of the parish committee and was a trustee of the church funds.
He was married in 1880 to MARIANNE RUSSELL of Barre and they would have
celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary of June. He leaves his wife and two
nephews.
The funeral will be held from the late home, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Interment will be in Glen Valley cemetery in chare of Funeral Director, PAUL
W. SNYDER.
