Harlow, Would you mind saying what about Tristram turns you off?
A couple of other people asked, so I ask the indulgence of the list for
a brief,
off-topic reply.
Tristram had the notion he would set up the colony on Nantucket along
the lines of an
English estate with Tristram in charge. In this he wasn't so very
peculiar for his
time, but not everyone else on the island felt like being a peasant and
Tristram
didn't exactly play fair--by our lights anyway. It's a complex story,
but a
fascinating one with a famous reconciliation in the next generation.
The later
history of Nantucket, such as the hardships the islanders endured during
the
Revolution and their attempts to remain neutral, is also very
interesting. I
don't really know all that much about Nantucket, but I've read two or
three histories
of the island and enjoyed them.
