I just learned something yesterday when I was researching in the Plymouth
Colony Marriages book which was very old. It was a transcript of names and dates
for marriages that took place in Plymouth Colony from the very early years.
These names apparently had been published in a newspaper called The
Advertiser.

Anyway, to make the story short, I discovered that when I was looking for a
Lemuel Clark that it also referred me to look under the name Samuel. When I
was showing to the librarian she said, yes, Lemuel is also Samuel.

So keep this in mind when you are researching for first names. Look for
derivatives.
