On the subject,
Soon after I first learned a little over a year ago, that I descended from Stephen Hopkins through his oldest daughter Constance, several people e-mailed me to tell me about the teen novel "Constance: A Story of Early Plymouth" by Patricia Clapp, Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co., Inc.., NY, 1968. I went online to Rare and First Edition bookstores and scooped up some first edition copies of the book for our six grandchildren. The most I paid for a first edition was $30.
This summer, I finally took some time to relax around the pool a little and read the book. The humor was what I enjoyed most about the book. Evidently, Patricia Clapp Cone, wife of a descendant of Constance Hopkins, was typing a genealogical report for a relative, and she became fascinated by a copy of Stephen Hopkins' will. She even visited London and Leyden and the site of the Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts.
Then, her research led to writing this fictitious novel with references to historic facts throughout the story. She used as a vehicle for the novel, an imaginary journal kept by Constance Hopkins. It is fun to read the descriptions of the young people that were on the Mayflower. If I, a grandmother, could lose myself and feel as though I were right back there in Plymouth Colony, then, certainly the young people who read this book must be able to do that, also. The book was delightful!
Question: Who was Patricia Clapp's husband, "Mr. Cone?" I have never seen that surname connected with the Hopkins line, but his surname might not appear in the first five generations. Does anyone know if Patricia Clapp Cone is still living? Evidently, they lived around Boston.
I would like to tell her to keep on reprinting the book.
