Subject: Fwd[Ma-Bay-Colony] questions? Rebecca Bangs/Jonathan Sparrow
Date: Wed, 02 Feb 2005 21:09:14 -0500

Dear Christie,

Please take a deep breath, and understand that you (and the alligator)
are both correct, but talking about two very different women named
Rebecca Bangs who happen to be 3 generations apart. Both are daughters
of Edward Bangs, but one is the immigrant, and the other his grandson.
If not an apology, you at least owe some kind words of misunderstanding
regarding your analysis of the Message posted to MA-BAY-COLONY :-).

Please scroll down.

First, allow me to point out that Rebecca Bangs married Thomas YOUNG
(not Curtis), but the paragraph presented by the alligator was poorly
constructed, and easy to mis-interpret.

Secondly, Rebecca Bangs, the daughter of the immigrant Edward Bangs, was
born "say 1636" according to Robert Charles Anderson in The Great
Migration Begins (GMB), making it highly unlikely that she would marry
anyone in 1730 at the advanced age of 94 years.

Thirdly, Edward Bangs (the immigrant), in his will dated 19 Oct 1677
(GMB) and proved 6 Mar 1677/8 says the following, and I quote:

> and I give to my grandchildren, viz: the children of my daughter Rebecka
> deceased four pounds at my decease" [PCPR 3:2:106].

Fourthly, Jonathan Sparrow, the widower of Rebecca Bangs, did remarry to
Hannah Prence, the widow of Nathaniel Mayo, and this is an issue.

Now, fast forward to the early 1700's, and you will find another Rebecca
Bangs, born 9 Mar 1709, the daughter of Edward Bangs (the grandson of
Edward Bangs the immigrant) and his wife Ruth Allen. It was she who
married Thomas YOUNG 11 Feb 1730 in Harwich. This Thomas Young was born
24 Oct 1705 in Eastham [MD 9:9], the son of Henry Young and his wife
Sarah (likely, but not proved, Sarah Snow, d/o of Jabez Snow and
Elizabeth Smith).

It is most likely this Rebecca Bangs that the Archivist at the Sturgis
Library is discussing in reply to the alligator's query.

Please know that I am not a Bangs researcher, and have shared what
little information I have from GMB, the Hopkins Silver book, and the
Brewster MFIP. The important red flag, in my opinion, is Rebecca's
supposed birth date (1636) which precludes marriage to anyone in 1730.

> REBECCA BANGS, b. say 1636; m. Eastham 26 October 1654 Jonathan Sparrow [PCR 8:15].

Perhaps another Bangs researcher can shed more light on the subject.

Hoping to have been of some assistance,

Pam Sears
