Scott:
If you remember your DeMolay training, you had the Bible on the alter!
The Masons also have the Bible on the alter along with the Eastern
Star, Job's Daughters and probably the Rainbow Girls. All of these
organizations incorporate the teachings from various chapters
throughout the bible.
As I am not overly religous and have never read the bible from cover to
cover, I can't answer if it specifically prohibits Masonic joinings.
The Catholics have always been welcome to join the varous groups, but
the church has generally tried to get them to join the Knights of
Columbus instead. I'm not sure of the reasons why they don't wish
their members to join, but they do. Whether it is written somewhere
I'm not sure. Perhaps it was a Pope's edict or something way back
when. But I don't think it is specifically mentioned in the bible.
A lot of our US Presidents have been Masons - George Washington was
one. Also the famous musician Mozart was a mason too. So the masons
have been around for a very long time.
Look at the masonic emblem What occupations do you see? Do you see the
square and compass? Doesn't that represent the carpenters and masons
and other occupations? Look at the Dollar Bill. The all-seeing eye at
the top of the Pyramid. That is a masonc symbol. Think about the
movie that came out a couple of years ago and the new one that is
either just released to go see or is about to. It fits into the
masonic world rather handly. Look back at the time period of the
Guilds in Europe. A lot of those guilds were masonic in nature. The
masons have been around for centuries if not eons.
The masons do believe in a separation of church and state and they
believe in education as I'm sure, Scott, you will remember from your
DeMolay days.
Masons won't ask anyone to join. You as an individual must ask a mason
about masonry and say you are willing or want to join. It doesn't
matter what religion you are. You can be a Jew, Mormon, Muslem, Hindu
too. It doesn't matter. However, I believe that mostly protestant,
baptists, Episcopalian, Luterans, and those type religions are the main
body of membership. Perhaps because that has been in the past, the
main source of membership. Who were your neighbors, what was their
religion, where were they living. The other religions tend to shun
masonry for whatever reason, perhaps just out of ignorance about who or
what a mason is or because those are some of the more recent religions
that have entered the borders of the US since the 1940s or so. But if
someone wanted to join, they can. The only thing the masons ask is
that you believe in god. God, whatever he/she is to you. Doesn't
matter. Just so long as you believe.
Perhaps Father Haldane could answer this question if he is still on the
list.

Hi, beware of Coat of Arms a lot of them are phony. Or are in the hands
of
the wrong person. A lot of Coat of Arms were popular to do in the early
19th
century, by young ladies. I would have an expert look at it, and
determine if
it was authenticated. Otherwise its just a pretty mantle piece.
Also where does it say in the Bible about prohibition about joining a
fraternal organization. Looks like many of my relatives will be going
to hell.
My
grandparents were in the Masons, and they read the bible. I was in
Demolay for
a short time.

Hello everyone,
It's possible that Myles Standish was a Mason, but not
probable. Masonic lodges in those days were composed mainly of the
aristocracy and the landed gentry. And with the Biblical
prohibitions against joining fraternal organizations it's not likely
that anyone with that sort of connections would have been associated
with a group like the Pilgrims, even in a hired capacity.
I was sirprised to learn recently that a black bar diagonally
across the shield in a coat-of-arms (bar sinister) denotes
illegitimacy! As I remember, the Standish of Standish coat-of-arms
that my granddad had hanging prominently in the livingroom includes
this symbol (as well as a rat and a rope!) Could illegitimacy
possibly be why no one can find information on Myles Standish's
origins?
