A Call for Sharing Stuff.
My wish list:
a.. STANTON/STAUNTON;HORAN;CORLEY information
b.. Information from or about the following [Civil] parishes [Historical, Church, Economic, Societal, Antidotal, etc]:
AGLISH
BALLINTOBER
BALLYHEAN[E]
BREAFFY/BREAGHWY
BURRISCARRA
BURRISHOOLE
ISLANDEADY
KILDACOMMOGE
TURLOUGH
What I can share:
a.. An ISLANDEADY Word doc. of collected tid bits of data and information
b.. A Castlebar/Westport Word doc. [many pages] of collected data about the above parishes with an emphasis on Stanton/Horan/Corley.
c.. I will check the index of a variety of books & CD's for Townland and Surname references.
Some of the references books that I recommend are:
History of Mayo the 4 Volume set by J F Quinn
"In There Own Words: The Famine in North Connacht 1845-1849 by Liam Swords 1999 [crammed with easy to find primary source references of the Famine years with many townlands and surnames mentioned]
"Women in Mayo 1821 -1851: A Historical Perspective by Maureen Langan-Egan 1986 [so very very good!]
"Annals of Famine in Ireland" by Asenath Nicholson, Ed. by Maureen Murphy 1998 [credible primary sources]
"Land and Popular Politics in Ireland: County Mayo from the Plantation to the Land War" by Donald E. Jordan, Jr., 1994. Excellent!
CD # 188 Family Tree Maker; "Index to Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864"
CD "County Mayo Chronicles and History" by Andrew J. Morris 2000 [www.ajmorris.com]
Of Specific Interest:
"Achill Island" by Theresa Mc Donald 1997 [everything you ever wanted to know...]
"Captain Boycott and the Irish" by Joyce Marlow 1993 [events of the Land League days]
"Connemara Days" by Steve Mayhew 1999 [Cong and "The Quiet Man" movie]
"Fifty Years Behind the Counter" by Kevin Duffy 2001 [A Reminiscence of Cong]
"The Corrib Country" by Richard Hayward 1993 [with a great map of wider lake area]
"Itchy Feet & Thirty work" by Birdie Mulloy ["a guide to the history and folklore of Ballinrobe"] Hard to get.
"The Living Landscape: Kilgallan, Erris" by Seamas O Cathain & Patrick O'Flannagan 1975 [much is in Irish about North West Erris with a detailed map of townland boundaries]
Just about all my books came from Desmond Kenny's Galway Book Store see www.kennys.ie
