There was a mention of the "Jane McCleery" in an article on the Rev. William Steele Dickson.

There were a "large number" of McCLeerys in Portaferryi n the 1700's to 1800's. . One of the merchants named James was an importer and I wondered if the names of the ships might refer to his family.

Gravestone in the Ballyphilip Graveyard in Portaferry
: Here lie the remains of Jane McCleery alias Dick late wife to James McCleery Portaferry, merchant, who departed this life the 8th March 1777 aged 30 years. Here also lie three of their children viz. John, Eliza, & Rose who died young. Here also lie the remains of the above Jas. McCleery who departed this life the 27th of December 1801 aged 53 years. Also the remains of Henry McCleery his son who departed this life the 16th of February 18?? aged 27 years. Also the remains of Jane McCleery alias McKibben, second wife to the above named James McCleery, who departed this life April ... 18?8 aged 68 years. Also two of their children John and Thomas who died young. Also Charlotte McCleery alias Blow, wife of Henry McCleery , who died 20th January 1860 aged 71 years.

I associate John Johnston of Portaferry with shipbuilding, though I don't know why. William McCleery, Jr. erected a gravestone in the Portaferry Ballyphilip graveyard for Johnston and his family and was buried there himself when William died July 26, 1869 aged 80 years.
