Hi all, I attempted to send some attachements to the mail list and it appears rootsweb won't let me. You may have received a goofy looking message that included the attachments as raw uncoded MIME data meaning that rootsweb did not convert the docs back to their original form after being received.

Ok. I won't bore you with the techie stuff.. Basically I receved a letter from a Wally McCollum and he shared some very interesting documentation on the Daniel McCollum of Habersham Ga including a pic of his son William's wife grave. There is also a doc on his Rev War Pension and what appears to be some historical info including that his gr grandfather was a Scottish immigrant.

Since the rootsweb won't convert attachments, if you would like a copy of the above, send me a note and I'll reply with it.

Hi Wally, thanks for the pic and the info. Unfortunately, this Daniel is not the Daniel I am searching for. I am copying a few other McCollum related mail lists with your info as there are other McCollum descendants that may be interested in it.

Just so you know, there were a few Daniel McCollum's within close vicinity of each other around the time of the Rev War and in the past it had been very easy to confuse them. I find it interesting the info you gave below:

"The 1840 census identified him as an 86 year old Revolutionary War veteran." Doing the math, he would have been born in 1754.

There is a Daniel McCollum that is well documented with the DAR as being born January 24, 1754 in York, Pa and died April 12, 1842 in Preston, Va. He was an Ensign in the Rev War, his wife's name was Sarah Moore.

The Daniel I am searching for was born approx 1744. After the Rev War, my Daniel settled in the 96th district of Pendleton Co in S.C. According to his 1827 Rev War Pension application, he stated he was a Blacksmith. . In 1795 this Daniel sold his farm and blacksmith tools and he and several family members migrated to Ky. About 1820, this Daniel moved to Posey Co, Ind where we believe he died abt 1832.

There is also a Daniel McCollum, born 1760 in East New Jersey, who also lived in the 96th district of Pendleton Co in S.C. The 1790 census shows both Daniels in Pendleton Co. It is believed that my Daniel was an uncle to the other Daniel.

There was also a Daniel McCollum of Guilford Co, m. Mary Thrasher that I know little about other than he was in the area at the same time as the above.

I'm copying a couple of maillists where there may be descendants of this family. You be interested in joining these mail lists and share and seek information.

After reviewing the Daniel(Habersham) doc, I'm suspecting that some of the information there may be a mixture of the 2 Daniels of Pendleton Co, S.C. Perhaps some of the members of theses lists can help. I do find the information regarding the Habersham Ga Daniel's Gr grandfather as being a Scottish immigrant interesting. Now if we can only find out who he is ...

Thanks so much for sharing this info

Subject: Daniel's Grave

Michael,
I took this picture two weeks ago. My evidence supporting it being Daniel's grave is the following:
The marker in the foreground is Daniel's son William's wife Susannah Miller McCollum. To the left of the unmarked grave is William and Susannah's son Daniel H. McCollums' grave (born in 1813). To the left of that grave is Daniel H's son George W. McCollum's grave (born in 1845). Just behind the unmarked grave is the marker for John and Elizabeth Stovall. Elizabeth was Daniel's daughter and this was the family Daniel is shown in the 1840 and 1850 censuses as living with. It isn't likely that he moved again after age 90, so his daughter and son-in-law probably buried him at the cemetery where the other immmediate family had been buried. The 1840 census identified him as an 86 year old Revolutionary War veteran.
In 1830 Daniel and his son John lived on adjoining farms in the Blue Creek District and John's brother William and his second wife Esther Edwards lived on nearby Brasstown Creek.
If you or any other McCollums (or Daniel McCollum descendants) are interested, I'll let you know when the grave marker comes in from the VA and when I plan to put it down at Blue Creek.
