Hello.
When the 1911 census came out for England, I finally discovered (surprise!!)
that my grandfather and his parents were born in the area of Londonderry,
Northern Ireland. had hunted unsuccessfully for years in England and
Scotland.
My grandfather, Malcolm Lewis McGregor/Macgregor was born July 22,1894 in
Londonderry. His three brothers were William McCullough McGregor/Macgregor
(abt 1885), Leslie Webster (Burke) McGregor/Macgregor born March 8, 1889,
Robert Snowden McG born about 1891.
They seem to be Macgregor or MacGregor depending on the descendant in
England, McGregor in Ireland.
Parents were:
Robert McGregor (son of Robert) born abt 1859 and Sarah Louisa MCcullough
(daughter of William - a teacher) married 1882 in Londonderry. Can't find
births, as not registered before about 1864. ?
These McGregors seem to be from a tiny rented house in Clondermott
(Glendermott). No sign of them in the 1831 census in that area, however.
It's not all that common a surname in the whole area, though in the 1800's
that I can see.
I believe the 1859 Robert had siblings - probably a William born in 1850's
or early 1860's, also, Mary McG (1867), Jane (Jean) Carnegie McGregor
(1869), Lizzie McG (1871).
Two questions, really:
1. Does anyone have any connections with this family?
2. Can anyone suggest some easy to access reading on how people like these
McGregors came to be in Ireland? It's pretty clear the first ones were poor
- possibly, even probably, farmers.
Robert, my great-grandfather (1859 one) at the time of his marriage in 1882
was an 'agent' - and by 1906 was in London as manager of a motor-tyre
company. Unable, so far, to make any link between Ireland and this London
occupation. Surely motor-tyres were fairly new in 1906? He died in 1914 in
Whitechapel.
Thank you so much for any help, and hoping to find some relatives out there.
I've been able to trace downwards pretty well with three of the four
brothers, but there are very few of us in our generation.
