Halsey,

Thanks for the encouragement!! I JUST FOUND JOSEPH IN 1820!! I had found
him in 1830, 1850 and 1860 but could not find them in 1820. Joseph and
Rachel were married in 1815. They should be on the 1820! On Ancestry.com,
you have to search for "McKay" and "Mc Kay" separately as well as all the
other possibilities such as "McCay" or "Mc Cay" and "McRay or Mc Ray" and
"McClay or Mc Clay", etc., etc., etc. You get the picture! I tend to
forget what I've tried and what I haven't tried. That's why I was hoping to
find his mother. Well, I still don't know what the transcriber used for a
first or last name for Joseph on the 1820 census but the way I found it, I
searched for McRay in NY, Erie, Aurora. Benjamin came up and on the page
with him is clearly Joseph McKay! I think the transcriber blinked their
eyes.

I believe it was the 1850 federal census record that was discussed to death
this past March or else it was the 1855 NY state census record. As the lady
from "down under" says in a TV game show commercial, "Where YOU binnnnn...?"
;) Bob Letson discovered this EDSON woman and was asking questions on the
LETSON list and I copied MCKAY-ELKENNY list throughout all the messages...,
I hope. It is Sarah (BLANCHARD) LETSON. She did not die until 1857. If
you wish to read the discussion, search (Advanced tab) for "Edson" (Body:)
on MCKAY-ELKENNY at:

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search

There is a woman of seventy and under eighty with Joseph in 1820. I believe
that could very well be Elizabeth BOSTWICK McKAY. Isaiah Letson (Sarah's
father) lives until 1848. So "Sary" BLANCHARD LETSON is still living with
her husband. That could mean that Elizabeth lived until after the 1840
census with Joseph and Rachel since we have an elderly woman on it too.
Wonder where Elizabeht's tombstone could be!?!? We shed some light on one
question and create more questions. Isn't that the way genealogy research
works!! Thanks again!

Later...Nancy

Hi Folks:

OK, I guess I'm totally confused. I was looking for any trace of Elizabeth
Bostwick McKay in the early 1800s Censuses. I looked for her son, Joseph
McKay. I couldn't find him in the 1810 or 1820 Census (has anyone else found

him?). I did find him in the 1830 Census of Aurora, Erie County, NY, in the
1840 of Colden, Erie County, & the 1850 Census of Colden (as Joseph W
McClay).

In the 1830 Census he has a woman in his household age 70-80 (born
1750-1760). in the 1840 Census he has a woman age 70-80 (born 1760-1770).

I thought that this might be his mother, but the 1850 Census has a woman
named "Sarah Edson" age 73 (b. 1777). Here is the full entry:

Joseph W McClay*......M..61...NY.....*so written
Rachel..........................F...51...NY
Apelona*.....................F...20*..NY... *my reading; very hard to read
Charles........................M..16...NY
Warren*......................M..10...NY......*hard ro read
Abijah*........................M..04...NY......*my reading; hard to read
Sarah Edson*..............F...73....RI.......*so written

The family of Rachel's brother John Letson (age 40) is directly below this
family.

Who in the world is "Sarah Edson"? Is "Edson" an error for Letson? I can't
see how she could be Sarah (Blanchard) Letson, who died in 1837. (Did she
actually die in 1857? or is this some unrelated person?). In any case, this
does not appear to be the same person as the woman in the 1830 & 1840
Censuses.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any Cemetery Lists for Erie County.

Halsey
