Subject: [MCKAY-ELK] Alexander McKay Sr. in 1790 US Federal Census...?
Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2007 08:05:34 -0700

Folks,

I noticed that David Baars does not include the 1790 census for any of the
McKay's. I have been wanting to ask this question for a long time and have
just never taken the initiative. There are several Alexander McKay's of
different spellings in the 1790 US Federal Census. Which one is Elkenny's
son...?

Has anyone found more census records spelled uniquely perhaps?

By the ages of the children and when they married, there should be the
following in the home of Alexander and Mary (SACKETT) McKAY. Of course,
some of them could be "farmed out" in other homes but not the smaller
children.

I've never heard that Alexander lived in Boston, MA but based upon the
children, the MA record fits the best.

The last event that I can find existing around 1790 is the basptism of
"Benyamin", so of "Alexander macky and mary Sacht" recorded in the Records
of the Reformed Dutch Church of Wawarsing, Ulster, NY. According to Google
Earth there is 31 miles between Wawarsing and Montgomery. The children ages
don't match unless the census taker couldn't tell girls from boys! ;)

I did this quickly so I've probably messed up somewhere. Please correct me
and by all means, please come back with all thoughts on the subject.

Those not related to Alexander, it would be great to hear where your
descendant of Elkenny was located in 1790 too. Thanks!

Later...Nancy
