Blanche,
What a find in 1790! Silvester McCoy (transcribed by Ancestry.com as McCoy)
-- I agree with you that it looks more like "McCay" on the image. I have
looked for Sylvester many times without success. Thank you SO much! A
couple of the children that are listed may have died shortly after the
census and before complete adulthood or it could have been brothers and
sisters of Sylvester and/or Elizabeth.
I was being hurried out the door by my husband to go work on building a
"rail" fence to hold up the Maximillian sunflowers and I totally missed
including the two other children of Alexander's. I had been working on the
message for a couple days and was determined to send it that day. I also
misspelled David Barss' name and forgot to include that it was his Timeline
that I hadn't found anything on the 1790 census.
I'm also working on the other early censuses and hopefully will get
something in the email about what I discover some time soon. However, we're
headed to Texas next week for a couple days in search of ripe peaches!
Later...Nancy

Nancy,
I am unable to answer which ones of the names you had would be the
Alexander we are searching for. But, somehow, I do not believe that the
family lived in Ulster County or in MA. I do know that children of
Alexander and Mary lived in Albany County, NY., parts they lived in
became Saratoga County and Rensselaer County in 1791. An Alexander and
Mary McKay owned property in Greenfield, Saratoga County, selling it in
1801. At this time they may have moved to Onondaga County, NY., where
Alexander supposedly died. There is an Alexr Mc Kay on the 1810 census
in Marcellus, Onondaga county, NY., with 2 older members plus others I
can't identify. Elizabeth and Alanson Edwards and Lois and Benjamin
Douglas lived in Stephentown and Sarah and John Weed lived in Greenfield
or close to there. On the 1800 census, Northumberland, Saratoga County,
NY, it has John Weed, Benjamin Douglas, Alexander McCay and a Daniel
McCay. The Daniel does not fit, however, but the Alexander does. It
shows him with 2 males 10 to 16 years old (could be Charles and
Benjamin), 1 male 16 to 26 (could be Alexander, JR.), 1 male 45 plus
(Alex, Sr.) and 1 female 45 plus (Mary). No proof, however.
Not sure about this, but Balstown could be the same as Balston Spa in
Saratoga county. Beautiful place.
By the way, Nancy, two children of Alexander were left off of your list.
Simeon would have been 10 years old in 1790 and Alexander, Jr. 8 years
old.
At least 8-10 people should have been in Alexander's household in 1790,
unless they were farmed out.
Joseph and Mary Wadsworth were in Stephentown, Albany County, NY., in
1790. Of interest, on that same census, is what looks like Silvester
McCay. The age portion is missing at the top, but in the 3 columns is 2
4 2. Is this 2 males, 4 children and 2 females? He did have 4 children
by this time, but who the extra male and female could be, I do not know.
These older census records are just too frustrating.
I will keep looking on the 1790 records to see if I can find more of the
families.
Blanche McKay
