Some of these services will let you list a query or give info, but then want
you to buy a membership to answer queries to you. I'm happy to help people,
but not if it is going to cost me $100 or so. They won't give you the info
without a membership they just tell you one is waiting for you.

What are you talking about? I have never had a problem answering a query on
a rootsweb mailing list.
