Message Board Post:

I have a Jane McKee who was a widow in Queens, NYC by 1880. She had several children: Joseph A born Ireland June 1860, William born Ireland ca 1858, Theresa born Ireland ca 1865, Alice born Ireland ca 1868, Catherine born NY ca 1872, and Ann born NY ca 1874.

Joseph did not come over until 1880, so I'm guessing he came when he found out his father had died. Perhaps he came to help his mom out with her children. He was a switchman in 1880 for the L.I.R.R. William was a conductor.

Joseph married Eliza Taggert/Taggart, and by 1910 it said they had been married 19 yrs. She didn't come over until 1882 however, so perhaps he married her right before he came here, and they were getting ready to celebrate their 20th anniversary the year of the 1900 census?

I don't know Jane's maiden name. However, my grandmother's mom was a Catherwood before she married Harold Johnston. Her mom was Mary Ellen Catherwood Johnston. Seems like all the McKee's, Johnston's and Catherwood's all had pretty much the same first names, which makes it difficult if not impossible to trace them! I've heard also that the McKee's and Catherwoods were connected many times in Ireland. Hope this is a connection for you and helps some.

My Mary Ellen is supposedly buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens btw. Good luck and happy hunting!
