SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Dr. John William McKee, 82, died after a long illness on March 25, 2009.
He was born Sept. 25, 1926, to Ranson and Lulu Crossley McKee, in Muscatine.
He graduated from Muscatine High School in 1944 and was in the U.S. Navy until 1946. He married Helen Mosher in 1947.
He graduated with honors in 1949 from Iowa State College at Ames with a bachelor's degree in physics. He was awarded a Ph.D. in biology and physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1954 after receiving a fellowship from the Atomic Energy Commission.
He enjoyed football, track, skiing and mountain climbing.
He was employed by the UCLA Medical School, Douglas Aircraft Co., and McDonald Douglas where he retired as chief scientist, lunar/Mars evolution, APD tech division.
He came to Santa Barbara in 1962 to join GE Tempo. His last book was "New Horizons in Science."
In retirement, he volunteered at the Call Tech Alumni Association, Page Youth Center, Titan and the Salvation Army.
He held a private pilot's license.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, and two daughters, Martha McKee (Tom McNaughton), Shauna Stark (Michael); four grandchildren, Matthew Widmann, Jacqueline, Lucy and Will Stark; and a brother, Clifford McKee.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Tamara Sue McKee.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Clifford R. McKee, 91, of Muscatine, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 20, 2009, at Unity Hospital.
Reverend Ted Landers will officiate the private service. Honorary bearers will be Robert Miller, Ernie Morgan, John Stevens, Frank Schmidt, Michael Rankins and Jeremy McKee. Casket bearers will be Jeff Hartley, Kyle Bass, Luke Jordan, James Rock, Robert Brauns. Private burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the family in care of Pam Curtis. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Clifford was born on September 7, 1918, in Muscatine, the son of Leander Ransom and Lulu Crossley McKee.
He attended Iowa State University.
He married Dorothy R. Soll on June 14, 1940, at the First Baptist Church in Muscatine. She preceded him in death on September 7, 2007.
He was a US Army veteran serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He retired from Grain Processing Corporation in 1993.
He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of Toastmasters.
Clifford loved his family and served the Lord daily.
Those left to honor his memory include one son, Jim McKee of Riverside, California; two daughters, Melanie Kraklow and husband, Dan, of Muscatine, and Pam Curtis and husband, Darrell, of Illinois City, Illinois; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers, John, Lee, and Harry; and one sister, Carol.
