Oh how jealous I am, all of you with McKillops who actually lived in Scotland! My
earliest known McKillop ancestor is John, who was in the Royal Navy and drowned in 1782,
off the coast of Hampshire, England.
Sadly, he was very bad at filling in forms and despite looking at every pay and muster
book for every ship he served on (days spent in the PRO, London, getting filthy dirty and
picking up heavens knows what kind of bugs from 18th century naval records) he never
recorded his place of birth, despite there being a special column for doing so, and when
he got to be a Lieutenant he made sure everyone else did.
Is it possible that a young man who was educated enough, or rich enough to get a
commission in the Royal Navy didn't know where he was born? does this point to him being
an orphan?
If anyone has any ideas of how to scale this brick wall I would be very grateful.
regards,
Clare McKillop.
