We have a yDNA success story that I’d like to share.
The first researcher got results from the yDNA surname study nearly a year
ago. The proved line is to DAVID McKINNEY who m. MANERVA LOVELL probably in
Roane County, Tennessee before 1830. They were first enumerated there in
1830. Based on census records and the birth places of some of their
children, they were in Alabama at least between 1836 – 1841. By 1845 they
were living in Washington County, Arkansas. The descendants of this family
eventually settled in Texas. Court records identify only one of David’s
sisters: ELIZABETH McKINNEY who m. WILLIAM G. BLAKE in Roane County,
Tennessee in 1822. The Blake family settled in Cedar County, Missouri.
The family had always believed that they were related to COLLIN McKINNEY
(descendant of Mordecai) and was surprised when the results came back and
they didn’t match with someone who has a paper trail to the Mordecai group.
The second researcher received results just last week. The family had traced
their line to WILLIAM C. McKINNEY (1800 – 1837) of Tennessee (possibly Giles
although that is not proved) who m. MAHALIA JANE (aka Alia) WILKERSON (1800
– 1861) ca 1819 possibly in Alabama. Because of estate settlements about
1840-ish in Montgomery County, Arkansas, the sons of this couple are known
to be:
*James Wilkerson McKinney (1822 – 1857)
*George P. McKinney (1832 – 1897)
*Samuel Jefferson McKinney (1837 – 1904)
And the daughters:
*Amanda M. McKinney (1830 – 1892) m1 Moses Isenhour; m2 J.D. Clifton
*Serena McKinney (1835 – unk) m. David A. Woolard
The yDNA results have a 66 marker match out of a possible of 67 markers.
This proves beyond any doubt that these two researchers share a rather
recent family history. The results do not tell them WHO that common ancestor
was, but they can combine their information and confine their searches to
one region.
Of other McKinney families who crossed the paths of these two were (1) Galen
McKinney whose ancestry to proved to be to James McKinney and his wife, Mary
Bryam Ballard, of Surrey County, North Carolina; (2) John McKinney and his
wife, Margaret Lee, who might be a son of James McKinney of Surrey County,
North Carolina – but that is NOT proved. This is the John McKinney of
‘Brigadoon’ fame; (3) John McKinney of South Carolina and his wife, Nancy
Horn; (4) Collin McKinney who is a proved descendant of Mordecai.
In the earliest marriage records of Roane County, Tennessee there were also
these families:
*Alexander McKinney who m. Priscilla Lyles in 1808
*John McKinney who m. Mary Clemmons in 1802
*Thomas McKinney who m. Jean Sharp in 1804
*Reuben McKinney who m. Jenny Lyles in 1811
Without that all-important scientific information to combine with the paper
trails it will not be possible to know how or if any of these families were
related.
