Your John was shown as John D. on the census with Charles McCARN / McLANE. I think he was born John David McLANE, and simply showed his first name and initial on that census (1910 I think it was).

I still think the census records I found are the proof that Margaret Virginia MILLER used the name Virginia in her marriage to the Charles (McLANE) WATKINS who was a son of Mary MASON McLANE WATKINS. And I think her parents were very likely George MILLER who also had a son Benjamine ...the right age to be Margaret Virginia's brother. I found him in Iowa in a later census that I think I also emailed as an attachment to you. If I have not sent that to you, let me know. ---Audrey in TN
