Hi,
My father was in the Pacific during WW II. He wrote my mother nearly every
day. They used regular envelopes, they simply wrote "Free" in the stamp
space.
Some time, they used very fancy envelopes, With cartoons on them, and if
they still use either "V. Mail" or "free."
There were many variations on the simple idea. They had censured on nearly
every thing. Sometime they wrote it on the envelope, sometime they had fancy
labels to close the envelopes. Then they were sent through the regular mail.
I had some of the European envelopes in my stamp collection.
I hope this helps.
