Hi,

I've been doing some recent reading and research on how folks were listed on
the census in past years. On many census' people who were not white...ie
black, Indian, Asian etc.......could have been listed as black. Various laws
mandated certain listings at certain times in history. Any one considered
"not white" in some census were listed as "free persons of color", mulatto,
black, or as N.
One of my ancestors was Indian. However the government at that time did not
allow for any race listing for Indians. So he was listed as a free person of
color on one census. It's also not uncommon for person who were considered
"non white" to have been listed in various ways in different census years,
depending on the laws at the time and/or on the judgement of enumerator.
