I think the point being made here, Cheryl, was that census info is not always accurate and we all need to be aware of this when searching. There can be other 'mistakes' besides race and color. One of my ancestor lines is Hovelson. But on one census the writing makes it appear as Boweldson. I could have easily overlooked that if I did not recognize some of the first names and dates. I thought the explanation of listing an Indian as a free man of color was interesting - since my granddaughter has Cherokee in her background. That might be helpful to me in researching her line. It's interesting also to see what the laws of the time dictated - or as was pointed out, the enumerator could have made a simple mistake.
