Jeanne (there, I got it right this time)
I also meant to include somewhere you can access these records. Check
with your largest local library as they probably have a genealogy
section and census records which you can look at for free. There may be
time limits so that all patrons have access, but if they aren't that
busy, then you can still use the facilities for much longer periods of
time.
Also, make good use of your local Family History Center at a local LDS
church. This is their genealogy department, so to speak. They have
microfilm, microfiche, and books available. Their website at
www.familysearch.org will give you information on locating your local
FHC. They are quite courteous to non-church members and members alike.
They are helpful, and you can order in films that you want to look at,
if they do not have the films already on the property to use. Make good
use of the online catalog. You can look for films/fiche on places, or
surnames, whichever you want.
Their films/fiche can be quite helpful in many ways. My father passed
away in 73 when I was 13 (I'm 41). I had always been told that he lied
about his age in order to get into the military. He always said he was
born in 1920, but he is not listed in the census for that year, and
grandma was only 13, so I believe he did lie. On a census of "educable
children" in his county down in MS, I found him listed in the 1933
listing at 10 years old, making his DOB 1923. No wonder they cannot
locate a birth certificate on him! I was 3 whole years off!
I never would have discovered this information, if it were not for the
microfilms at the LDS church. I am so glad they had the forethought to
begin documentation as early as they did.
If I think of any other things that might help, I will write again.
