Charles Russell CONDON7 (Charles David6 ,Stephen5, James4, Charles3, James2, William1)
b. 16 Nov 1898/99,
m. Esther PETRY, daughter of Jacob PETRY and Catharine "Kate" WOLFORD.
When Charles mother Sarah was injured in about 1907, she was unable to care for him. His brother Ira Elwood tried to care for him, but eventually he ended up in the Brethren's Home Orphanage. His son Winfield says that during a somewhat fiery sermon at Castine Church of the Brethren, parishioners were compelled to open their home to orphans, and Jacob PETRY, despite already having several children of his own, made the trip up Greenville Pike the very next day, coming home with Charles and his cousin (exact relationship unknown) Eva PENNY. Charles later married his foster sister, Esther, who he adored, and was often known to say that Jake PETRY was the only father he ever had or wanted, although he continued to see his parents
Charles and Esther lived across the field from the PETRY farm in West Manchester, Ohio, in the former Brown's Station brick schoolhouse. The property consisted of the school house, a large barn with hand hewn beams, a block constructed hog house, a tractor shed, a hen house, a garage or carriage house that was original to the old town of Brown's Station that once stood at the location, a garden shed and a privy. Later, Charles Russell built the "little house", a two room cottage next to the school house that he made his home for a short while in his old age. All of these original buildings still stand except for the hog house. Esther planted a flower garden on either side of the house, consisting especially of daffodils, gladiolias and peonies, that was the wonder of the neighborhood, and people routed their Sunday drives to pass by and enjoy it. The apple orchard stood in the high meadow directly behind the homestead. During this writer's early childhood there were only thr!
ee apple trees still standing in what had become the cow pasture, but was still referred to by the family as the "orchard." The small hard fruit was a great treat for the cows. At the time of this writing, one tree remains. Inside the house, Charles lowered the ceilings and made a livable second story, building the most perfect staircase with # wide shallow steps that require almost no effort on the part of the climber, no matter how heavy the load. He also built glass fronted upper kitchen cabinets to fit between the tall windows and reach the tall ceilings. In the wide doorway between the kitchen and living area he hung a porch swing. He told his granddaughter, Debra CONDON AZBILL, how he tunneled under the house to dig the basement and poured the concrete himself. Charles and Esther's granddaughter, Cathy CONDON, purchased the house in the 1980's and has restored it, and although the old coal oil stove, tall cabinets and porch swing are a thing of the past, the original !
wood floors, interior doors and flower garden are still in evidence. T
he family tore out the plaster lathe and replaced it with wallboard, power-washed the white paint from the faade, replaced the windows, repaired the mortar, slightly changed the floor plan to accommodate a laundry room and closets and replaced the cabinets (The originals now serve as china cupboards in two of the family's other homes). Still the property is as much unchanged as it could remain, given the passage of almost one hundred years and the five generations of the Condon family that have worked, played, rested and picnicked there.
Charles Russell CONDON died in 1979 at the Brethren's Home in Greenville, Darke Co., Ohio, having enjoyed weekly visits from this writer, his three-year-old great-granddaughter.
