Subject: [MDALLEGA-L] Mine Locations

I just came home from a weekend in Allegany County and went through my
emails.
I have a questions relative to those seeking info on mine locations. I
worked for a civil engineering firm in Pittsburgh several years back. We
did a lot of highway design for the state of Pennsylvania. On many
occasions the highways went through or near abandoned deep mines. One of
the mining companies had their headquarters in Uniontown. We would go there
and obtain prints of the mine layouts and the names of the mine. These mine
maps were like looking a city street maps. They left huge columns of coal
in place to support the roof on these mines and they were shown on the maps
as well as all entrances, air vents, etc.
I guess what I am trying to say is, there any such mine maps available for
review in the Cumberland area? The ones I have worked in the past were very
detailed. Does the State of MD have a Bureau of Mines, and if so would they
have any of these maps?
Just a suggestion, put it might be worth looking into.
