Maria,
I found the books to be a little helpful, but not all that much. Thomas and
Williams' History of Allegany County were a lot better with a lot of bios in
them. But I've since found out that not everything in those bios was fact.
My favorite of all the local books is Will Lowdermilk's "History of
Cumberland." It has a lot of George Washington's letters written from Fort
Cumberland. May not be too helpful if your ancestor didn't live there,
though. FORGET STEIGMEIR'S History of Allegany County unless you like soil
analysis and fruit trees.
I do not think any of them were worth $125.00 but then I'm cheap.
