I probably should have replied back to the list since other's seem to
tie in. Here is the reply I sent to Esther.
Hello Esther Mott,
" I have the impression that the people on Deakins' list living in that
area all received their land in the form of military land grants --is
this correct? " THIS IS NOT CORRECT. From the Allegany Co. GenWeb
Project we have a list of Settlers Westward of Ft. Cumberland when
Francis Deacon did his survey. These were basically squatters, but were
allowed to buy their property
for a nominal fee. The Soldier Lands were assigned to Maryland Rev.
soldiers from the lots not settled, and these can be found in Scharf's
History of Western Maryland. Lowdermilk's History of Cumberland gives
the names of the settlers who were already here, but does not give their
lot numbers. The following is copied from the Allegany Co. GenWeb
website.
Record of the Settlers entitled to preemptions on the reserved land
westward of Fort Cumberland in Washington County containing the numbers
and valuation of their lot as determined by the Commissioners arguably
to an act of the General Assembly passed November, 1788. Act also
directs that a preference should be Given to those settlers to purchase
636 lots by them respectively settled , to be discharged in three equal
annual payments in the years 1789, 1890 and 1791: in default of any
payment the land should be liable to proclamation by any citizen of
Maryland.
Alexander Moore 5 / " Lots 3791-92
Daniel Moore 5 / " Lots 3878
William Moore 5 / " Lots 2838-39
"And if so, is there some place I can obtain copies of the land grants,
and/or information about those who received them?" MARYLAND STATE
ARCHIVES HAS THIS INFORMATION, CHECK THEIR WEBSITE TO FIND HOW TO GET
COPIES.
"The 1800 census has Alexander Moore as living on George's Creek.
Family information has him living on Dan's Mountain. Could these both
be the same place?" GEORGES CREEK FLOWS AT THE BOTTOM OF DAN'S
MOUNTAIN, ON THE WESTERN SIDE. LOT 3791 ON GEORGES CREEK, AND IS
CONTIGUOUS WITH LOT 3792 WHICH IS UP THE WESTERN SLOPE OF DAN'S
MOUNTAIN, IN THE AREA OF BARTON, MD-BETWEEN LONACONING AND WESTERNPORT.
Hope this has been of some help.
