Carol,
Just a note on the Allegany County 1870 census: one particular enumerator
seemed to have gotten the instructions wrong and checked the boxes for
read/write if the person could read and write! I noted this in the
Frostburg District.

I have the 1870 Allegany Census on CD and a full name index for it. I had
a little trouble with the index CD which the manufacturer (not S-K)
corrected for me and now I can use it again. I am willing to do lookups as
long as the index CD holds up!
While I am on the topic of censuses, it is amazing what you find when you
can read a whole district. I saw things that I would not have normally had
the time to look for in the library, like different surnames in the same
house hold that gives some indication or relationship. This is not true in
every case, but it sure leads to clues to look for. I have just recently
found a missing orphan and enough information to trace Frostburg's John
Miller Standish all the way back to his 5th great grandfather, Myles Standish!
