Even if his mother died intestate--if she owned property there ought to
have been some estate settlement papers somewhere dividing it up? Have you
checked administrator bonds and estate inventories? (I guess you have.) I
suppose if they lived far out and were not into official records--the
family might just have arranged things among themselves. But if he
eventually sold the land himself, he would probably have to have shown his
title to it. Perhaps a later deed for the same property would recapitulate
the chain of title.
