My hat is off to any man that will take another man's child and raise it as
his own. My husband's grandmother had a a son out of wedlock. The man she
later married, my husband's grandfather, never excepted the child, the child
was not allowed in HIS house. The child was raised by his maternal
grandparents. I also have the situation in my family where my grandmother's
oldest brother was listed in the first census of the parents marriage by his
mother's maiden name & as step-son. All of the census after that, he had the
surname of his step-father & was listed as son. As far as I know, no one in
the family knew about this. I discovered it in the census when I started
doing genealogy. I don't know if his family knows or not.
