This is what I found in the paragraph, wasn't sure what you wanted...

"Lynn and I then started up the run. When we came to the drain above the
Toll House, we crossed over the top of the ridge on the opposite side of the
pike. A high fence ran parallel with the pike on top of the ridge. We
followed the fence on the outside where the brush was thick until about
opposite Reed's shop, when we saw a company of cavalry coming up the pike.
We dropped behind the fence and made ready to give them a round when they
came opposite us. Before they came up, we heard some persons talking in a
low tone down the fence a little ways from us. We came to the conclusion
that it was Yankee infantry sent out by the cavalry from being ambushed. We
thought best to get away, so we crept down the opposite side of the ridge,
some forty of (or?) fifty yards and concealed ourselves in some thick
laurel. We could yet hear talking in a low tone which seemed to be about the
same place. Soon we heard firing up the pike about Jersey Mountain road, but
this did not last long. We finally came to the conclusion that it was some
persons hiding from the Yankees, whom we heard talking and I proposed to
Lynn that we try and get near enough to see who they were. He said well,
there is no use for both of us to go. You find out and I will stay where I
am until you whistle. I crept toward them as quietly as possible, until I
discovered that they were citizens. I went up. There were two of them; Mr.
Joseph Poling and Mr. J. J. Combs. They had left town at the first alarm and
were lying behind the fence waiting for further developments. They said the
firing we heard was up about the Jersey Mountain road; and that the Yankee
cavalry had gone back to town."

Hope this helps,

Hazel in Poulsbo, WA
