Yep! My great-grandmother's maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Porter, she
married Richard Watson. Her obituary indicated that she was survived by a
sister, Mrs. Richard Loar of La Vale. I posted a message to the Loar family
message board at ancestry.com, asking if anyone knew of a Richard Loar who
married a Porter, and got a reply stating that a John Richard Loar (1891 -
1972) was married to Eva J. Porter and that they lived in La Vale in the
1940s.
Census research has been inconclusive. The only Porter I can find in the
Allegany County Census that I think could be my great-grandmother is "Lizzie"
daughter of John Thomas Porter and his wife Mahala Ann (I think her maiden
name was Crowe). But the birth date is off by several months, and Eva
doesn't show up in any of the census records for this family from 1880 -
1910, so if my gr-grandma is Lizzie Porter, and Eva is her sister, then Eva
didn't live with her parents. On the other hand, maybe my gr-grandma isn't
this "Lizzie" Porter after all.
Any ideas?
