I recently had a conversation with one of the staff at the Montgomery Co. MD
Historical Society where I volunteer. She is African American and involved
in genealogy. We were discussing the difficulty of finding slave ancestors
prior to the detailed census records of 1850 and later. There are some
Afro-American genealogy sites on the net, but a lot of info is buried in the
records of white owners. How can Black descendents find this info? For
example , few of my ancestors were well off enough to own slaves, but my
Mattinglys of Mt. Savage willed their slaves to the next generation. Surely a
few of their descendents live in Allegany Co. now. Does anyone know of a
central collection site, internet or otherwise, for these little bits of
genealogical data that would be a real find for Black genealogists. Those of
us who have wills and inventories would be glad to share if we just knew
where to do it.
