Subject: bark and tanneries....

My dad grew up in Everett near the big Tecumseh tannery...and could vouch for the strength of the odor. A bit like the Union Camp paper mill in Suffolk, VA, near where I grew up, which was a powerful presence even 20 miles upwind. I'd say leather curing is even more potent.
If I'm not mistaken, the Tecumseh works may have been begun by Jason Hanks, who also ran a tannery in Flintstone, near the one operated by Charles Gilpin of Gilpintown fame. No doubt they both ran through tons of local bark in a typical year.
