My grandfather, whose farm was near Purcell in Bedford Co. PA, was offered a
tidy sum for the hickory tree on his property. The buyer wanted the tree for
its bark (probably the lumber too but the offer came from a tanner). Grandpa
refused to sell because the tree shaded the spring house and kept it cool in
summer. The tree is still there. Well, the point of this is that hickory trees
along with the oak and locust already mentioned had value for the tanning
process. PS Paw Paw WV had a very smelly tannery.
