Subject: Framing old documents
Date: Sun, 4 Jul 2004 10:49:56 EDT
There were several messages on the list pertaining to framing old documents
and hanging them on the wall. (The best solution is to properly store the
original and hang up a copy.) However, if you do hang up the original, please
remember to put them in a place where they do not receive direct sunlight, where
they do not receive extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations (do you
leave the house baking while away on summer vacation?). Direct sunlight and even
normal ambient room lighting fades inks, yellows paper and makes it more
fragile. It is also suggested that they not be hung on an outside wall, or on a
wall that is shared by either plumbing, or a fireplace. Also keep away from air
vents. Documents are also subject to insect pests. Another problem is
newspaper backing. Sometimes some family members years ago framed a document, and
put newspaper in the back. Newspaper is very acidic and will damage other more
stable documents. There are many good books available on this topic, I just
thought I would bring up the issue. Take care,
