Also worth noting as far as land records go, and specifically for the
courthouse in Cumberland, is the presence of the original County Surveyor books for
Allegany Co. These can prove especially valuable for the first half of the
1800s, which seems to be the bulk of them. They are indexed both by the
landowner paying for the survey, as well as by the name of the parcel (remember,
this is MD!). In addition to finding out just where and what size your
person's parcel was, you'll also find notes as to the neighbors, and the usual
references to physical features like mountains and watercourses.
The bulk of the land patent surveys are down in Annapolis, and can be
requested at the MD Hall of Records (in person...no mail orders for these to my
knowledge).
