I found an 1860 Agricultural Census for Allegany County at the Oakland, MD
Ruth Enlow Library. It was on microfilm. I've no idea if they still have
it.
I found it very fascinating since my Great Grandfather had 26 children and I
had been wondering what he fed them. This gave some insite.
What William Alexander Hamilton had on his farm atop Warrior Mountain
between Flintstone and Oldtown.
The 1860 Agricultural Census lists William with the following:
100 acres Improved property; 225 acres of unimproved property
Cash value of property=$600.00
100 bushels of wheat; 100 bushels of rye; 50 bushels of Indian corn
25 bushels of oats; 400 bushels of Irish potatoes
80 pounds of wool; 200 pounds of butter; 1 ton of hay
3 horses, 2 milch cows, 2 other cattle
26 sheep and 8 swine
Value of livestock = $400.00
Value of equipment = $80.00
Value of orchard = $50.00
Value of animals slaughtered = $50.00
William obviously had a farm, 10 children and a fertile wife by 1860.
When he died in 1875, THE FARM was still not in his name.
