The following are a few newspaper clippings from my grandmother's scrapbooks.
While no date is on these, the clippings are from 1900-1920's. Grandma cut them
from Knox County newspapers. She was Mabel Mahla Frazier. Unless otherwise
noted, people listed as "from this city" or "from this vicinity" refers to Mount
Vernon, Ohio. I regret that in this scrapbook, Grandma didn't put the dates
beside the items she clipped. The following items were between 1900 and 1920.
Formal announcement has been made by Mrs. Clara Gordon of this city of the engagement of her daughter, Mrs. Helen Louise Gerrish, to Dr. John Legge of Cumberland, Maryland. Dr. Legge, during his five years' residence in Cumberland, has earned a prominent position in front ranks of medical practitioners in western Maryland. His years of preparation in this country and abroad, but notably in the clinics of Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London, where he spent three years in assidious study, gave him broadened experience.
The wedding will take place in Pittsburgh, Pa., January 12, in the presence of the immediate relatives of the contracting couple.

Legge-Gerrish
A copy of the Cumberland (Md) Daily News, containing the following dispatch from Pittsburgh, Pa., dated Jan. 12, has been received here.
"In the Louis XIV room of the Hotel Schenley this afternoon at one o'clock with a small company of relatives and intimate friends of the contracting parties to witness the ceremony, Dr. John E. Legge of Cumberland, Md., and Mrs. Helen Louise Gerrish of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, were united in marriage, the nuptial rite being solemnized by the Reverend G.S. Richards, Ph.D., pastor of the First Congregational church of this city.
"Both the Louis XIV and the private dining hall adjoining were beautifully decorated, a color scheme of red and green being artistically carried out. The bride, who was attired in a handsomely tailored traveling suit of dark blue panne velvet, with hat of harmonious shade, carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley and wore the groom's gift, a pearl and diamond lavallier. She was given in marriage by her mother, Mrs. Clara L. Gordon of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. while Master Charles Gordon Smith, the four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver H. Smith of this city and a nephew of the bride, acted as ring bearer, the ring service of the Congregational church being performed.
"Following the ceremony and a brief period of congratulations, an elaborate wedding feast, especially prepared for the happy occasion was served.
"In addition to those previously mentioned the company included Mrs. Oliver H. Smith of Cumberland, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Zinck of Steubenville, Ohio; Mr. Tennant and Dr. Behan of Pittsburgh, Joseph M. Crouch of Clarksburg, W.Va. and W.W. Brown of Cumberland.
Owing to the critical illness of Mrs. Corey of Niles, Ohio, the venerable grandmother of the bride, the plan to have the ceremony solemnized at the home of the bride's mother was changed during the past few days with the substitution of the arrangement previously recited.
"Dr. and Mrs. Legge will spend their honeymoon in the East and upon their return to this city will occupy the handsome and commodious residence No. 56 Cumberland street, recently purchased by the groom. Announcement cards state that they will be at home to their friends after March fifteenth."

Many Attend Reception
Dr. and Mrs. John E. Legge of Cumberland, Md., who were married recently in Pittsburgh, Pa., and who have been spending several days in Mt. Vernon, received friends in the alcove parlor at Hotel Curtis Friday evening from 8 to 10 o'clock. They were assisted by Mr. and Mrs. John Whitford and Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Baldwin, intimate friends of the bride, who was formerly Mrs. Helen Louis Gerrish of this city. About one hundred and twenty-five acquaintances called. Dainty refreshments were served.
Dr. and Mrs. Legge went to Columbus Saturday afternoon to visit Mrs. Lulu Canning and Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Ensminger until Monday, when will go to New York and other eastern cities to spend three weeks before returning to Cumberland.
