Unfortunate Man Had Just Succeeded
In Getting Out Of Way Of Freight
Train, Unaware Of Train On Other
Track.
Struck by the C. & P. passenger train while on his way down town, Millard F. Wagner, aged 56, a grocer of Shriver avenue, was instantly killed on the Valley street crossing at a few minutes of 8 o'clock last evening.
In company with his brothers-in-law Lewis H. and Denton Barth, of Oldtown, he had left his home, which adjoins the store, with the intention of going down town. When they reached the Valley street crossing they saw a long freight coming and all ran to get across ahead of it, not noticeing (sic) the approach on another track of a passenger train. The Messrs. Barth got across safely but Mr. Wagner was not quick enough and he was struck by the engine just as he was about to clear the track. The back of his head was crushed and his leg broken, but not cut off, as was the first report. Death was instantaneous. Coroner Wm. H. Shaw viewed the body and declared death the result of accident and that an inquest was unnecessary.
Previous to his assuming the proprietorship of the Shriver avenue store about three years ago, Mr. Wagner was a merchant at Oldtown. He was a member of the Merchants and Manufacturers' Association and of Washington Camp, No. 62, Patriotic Order Sons of America. He is survived by a wife, three sons, John A., Herbert S. and Walter A. Wagner, all motormen on the Cumberland Electric Railway, and three daughters, Mrs. Flora A. Kifer, wife of Robert L. Kifer, this city; Mrs. Julia D. Kemmer (sic), wife of Edward W. Kemmer (sic), of Baltimore, and Miss Maud Wagner _____ lived at home.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home conducted by Rev. Joseph Dawson, of Centre Street M. E. Church. Members of the M. & M. Association and the P. O. S. of A. will attend. Interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery.
