We are having something like that with our surname. In the very early 1700's
our ancestor Thomas Sealock, was given the surname Sealock. It was said that
he was an orphan and that whom ever found him or raised him gave him that
name. We could never find anything other than the original register in 1763
where he married. Nothing before here or in any other country. We are now
taking DNA tests to try to see if we can locate someone who matches our 37
marker test. As of yet nothing. But the search and the mystery continues.

You are correct adopted children have the same problem.
