At weddings here in western PA, in addition to the "usual" wedding cake, there is a table filled with nothing but cookies of all varieties, usually made by friends of the mother of the bride. Guests eat them at the reception and also take them home after the wedding, and some brides supply take out containers to assist in the taking home part. There does not seem to be any ethnic designation, and no one seems to be sure how it got started.
Depending on the mom of course, woe be the bride who says she doesn't want it, as her mom has made cookies for many, many, many weddings over the years, and this is now her pay back from all of her friends.
A friend from Cumberland married a young man from Pittsburgh a few years ago, in Cumberland. His mother insisted on the cookie table, and the bride's mother was frantic, trying to find people to make cookies for her!
Hope that helps, Jane
