Here is the info I have on my great-grandfather, David D. Porter: His Civil War records say only that he was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Whether it was county or city I don't know. I would guess the city. He was born in 1812. The first record of him we have in Illinois is when he married my great-grandmother, Lucinda Whitten in 1847. The first census he appears on in Illinois is 1850. His occupation was listed on the census as brickmaker. Later his occupation shows as a blacksmith. He enlisted in the 144th IL Infantry during the Civil War, serving as a guard at the Alton Confederate Prison. It was there that he contracted dysentery and died in 1865. His children's names are: Sarah J., William N., Owen Jackson, James D., Annie M., George, William Henry (my grandfather), and Ella Minerva.

I would really like to find out who his ancestors were. It would mean alot to me. I found the cemetery where he is buried (Salem Cemetery in Jersey County, IL), but the grave is unmarked. I have yet to find where his wife is buried. Seems the Porters are somewhat of a mystery! My other ancestors seem to jump out at me.

I would really appreciate any help in finding who David D. Porter was. Thanks in advance!
