Gary, I have been reading posts that mention German Churches. We will have one day in Oct. to research in Baltimore. Looking for records for Johann Fredrich Conrad Gerhardt, his wife Louisa Lubs, his mother, Mary (Maria) Gerhardt, brother Peter Jacob Gerhardt, and a brother William Gerhardt. Johann, aged 28, arrived in Baltimore on the ship Ocean, May 29, 1866. He was from Hessania and was a bricklayer. Also on the ship was his brother, Johann, aged 21, a shoemaker. The younger Johann died in 1866 in Baltimore according to church records in Germany.

Johann (Conrad) Gerhardt lived in Baltimore from 1866 until about 1877 when he moved to Johnstown, Pa. In 1871 he married Louisa Lubs who had arrived from Germany in 1870. Their son Conrad Henry Gerhardt was born Aug. 31, 1873 in Baltimore. Sons Henry, Otto and Louis were also born in Baltimore. He mostly used the name Conrad in this country, but also sometimes J.F.C. Gerhardt.

When we are in the area we will look for these people in the Zion Lutheran records. The only city directory I have seen is for 1875 and lists Conrad Gerhardt as a laborer living on Lanvale near Harford Ave. Was there a German Lutheran church in that area where he would likely have belonged?

I hope you can give us some guidelines, as we are unfamiliar with Baltimore history. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Marken Gerhardt
